Raise a Stein: Oktoberfest Celebrations Return to Downtown Phoenixville

Phoenixville will trade its usual Saturday pint for something a little more Bavarian on September 26, as downtown restaurants and breweries celebrate Oktoberfest with ceremonial keg tapping, seasonal beer, German-inspired food and a few friendly competitions.

Rather than taking place inside one festival area, this year’s Oktoberfest celebration will unfold at participating businesses around downtown. That means visitors can stop in for a keg tapping, settle in with a pretzel and a festbier or make an afternoon of visiting more than one celebration.

Bistro on Bridge will open the doors at 11 a.m. for its annual Oktoberfest celebration, which also marks the restaurant’s 17th anniversary.

Mayor Peter Urscheler will perform the ceremonial keg tapping at noon, officially getting the downtown celebration underway. The tradition mirrors the opening of Munich’s Oktoberfest, where the mayor taps the first keg and declares the festival open.

Throughout the day, Bistro will serve authentic Bavarian beers and German-inspired food. Lederhosen and dirndls are encouraged, although certainly not required.

A stein-holding competition is scheduled for 3 p.m. The premise is simple, even if completing it is not: competitors hold a full beer stein straight out in front of them for as long as possible without lowering or bending their arm. There also will be tinsel hair + manicures from 12-2PM, accordion music from 1-4PM, and a best dressed contest at 2PM.

Farther down Bridge Street, Stable 12 Brewing Company will hold its own Oktoberfest celebration from noon to 10 p.m. in its downtown taproom and beer garden. Stable 12 has announced two appropriately themed contests for the afternoon. The Great Stein-Off is scheduled from 2 to 3 p.m., followed by the Great Pretzel Challenge beginning at 3 p.m.

The brewery also has its Oktoberfest lager available for the season, giving visitors an opportunity to celebrate with a locally brewed version of the traditional fall beer.

Stable 12 lists Sunday, September 27, from 2 to 8 p.m. as the rain date for its outdoor celebration.

Why Oktoberfest Starts in September

Why Oktoberfest Starts in September

Despite the name, Oktoberfest traditionally begins in September.

The original celebration was held in Munich in October 1810 to mark the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. As the festival grew, it was eventually moved earlier to take advantage of September’s longer days and warmer weather while still ending in October.

Keg tapping remains one of its best-known traditions. In Munich, the mayor taps the first barrel at noon and announces that the keg has been opened before beer can be served throughout the festival grounds.

Phoenixville’s celebration is considerably smaller, but a town with its own deep craft-beer culture is a natural place to carry on the tradition.
